Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about you, how long you’ve been on the platform for, and what you enjoy about it.

My creator name is BrownGoddess5. There was already a 1, 2, 3 and 4, so I became BrownGoodess5. I started at the end of February because a friend of mine was on the platform and he told me about it. It sounded interesting, and so the same day I signed up and I got approved, and instantly started camming.

What I enjoy about the work I do is being able to connect with people from all parts of the world who have many different interests. I like connecting with individuals on a personal level, rather than it just being about taking off my clothes. I’ve met some really great people, kind people, supportive people, and for the most part, I’ve found it to be an accepting environment.

What does diversity mean to you in this modern world we live in?

I’m really glad to be participating in this because diversity means a lot to me. I am a visible minority, so throughout my whole life I have supported equality in my professional life. In past roles I’ve done communications for diversity organizations, and I actually helped a huge company redefine diversity.

I go with that version, or that definition of inclusiveness, instead of equal opportunity, EEOC laws or employment laws. I like to think of diversity as everyone being diverse, no matter if you’re a visible minority or not. Gay, straight, white, black, generational diversity. There’s also the level of education that someone might have from their upbringing, where they grew up regionally in the U.S., that’s going to affect your lifestyle behaviors, and what you’re accustomed to. So even within the U.S., two white people could be the same age, but two white men, for instance, could have completely different outlooks on life or experiences, simply based on geography.

I don’t like to exclude anyone from being diverse. However, I do think that, especially in 2020, there was a lot of movement around George Floyd being murdered, it was a big deal to be black from Minneapolis. I lived there for 30 years, so that was a huge deal for everyone, and around the world.

But you know, a lot of people who are used to being in the majority, had to learn from their own experiences, and until you are discriminated against, it’s hard to understand. If you listen a little bit more, it becomes a bit more clear that history is taught, and not everyone knows everything about everyone’s experience. It’s important to acknowledge that. So that’s how I think of diversity nowadays.

CAM4 does offer so much diversity, indeed the industry itself does. In what ways does a platform benefit from hosting a diverse network of creators?

It’s great that there’s so much diversity on CAM4, because it levels the playing field. CAM4 allows anyone with the necessary equipment to be a creator and to be successful, or maybe even try it for a little while and then step away. I have seen many successful creators from all walks of life, all areas of the world, and that is beneficial.

Not only to the audience, because they’re being exposed to more cultures or different perspectives, but because it also shows that people like certain things. I don’t know if it’s necessarily a fetish, but in college me and my friends used to see guys who thought my  background, my ethnicity was Indian. I was born in South America, but there’s some guys who gravitate toward Indian women, or like white girls or black girls. Everyone has their preference.

In college, I went to school in a small Minnesota town. It was interesting because there were so many people that like to collect certain ethnicities. So obviously, if you have a thing for that, you have a thing for that. This platform allows people to find what they like, and be exposed to things that they don’t know that they like.

What would be some of the great wins for society, for individuals to share themselves authentically, especially when it comes to the matter of diversity?

Awareness and exposure, coupled with diversity, have a lot to do with people’s open mindedness, and what they think is normal. It’s everyone’s choice, what they choose, what they want to pursue. As far as being 100% ethnic, authentic or having a mask on, not a literal mask, but something that you cover up, you really are being you. I consider myself a very real person and not fake, I can’t be fake, I hate that, I don’t kiss ass.

I am who I am, I listen to metal and I listen to reggae, and I listen to gangsta rap. Something as simple as music, shows a little bit about yourself.  I’m authentically representing my culture. My culture is not necessarily American, but I grew up in America, so for me to be authentic, shows people that all Indian people aren’t similar, and it’s not even my culture.

Though many people would peg me as a specific type of culture or individual, I don’t wear the sari, my parents don’t wear sari, they don’t even have an Indian accent, because they are from Guyana. You can be so many things without being put into a particular box or narrative. Everyone is unique in their own way.

That’s why I like to do anything that I do. I stand true to the politics I believe in, writing letters,  standing up, speaking out for what I believe in. Sometimes people are afraid of what they don’t know or expressing themselves.

Because I grew up in America, Minnesota, and I still have this other part of myself. Sometimes, when I was younger, it was kind of embarrassing to show up more authentically, but as an adult I take pride in that.

Please tell us where and when people can find you.

My username on CAM4 is BrownGoddess5 and I generally broadcast in the evenings. I don’t have a set time, but I’m moving toward being on a more established schedule. You can find me online probably around 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 pm EST for a couple of hours.
