Have you ever wondered how often you should have sex, or what frequency of having sex is normal? If yes, then you are not alone. Most people have asked themselves this question at least once, or possibly several times.
In this article we will answer the question on the basis of 2 scientific studies, as well as our own survey.
How much sex per day?
A day has 24 hours, and theoretically, as a man, you can reach orgasm up to 36 times during this period. However, Andre Gubilaum’s world record is unlikely to be achievable for most people.
Many men are no longer able to get an erection after a single climax because the hormone prolactin knows how to prevent it.
Women can also usually have sex up to 7 times a day or orgasm. The exact number depends on age, health and genetic predisposition. So you can hardly provide sweeping answers here.
How much sex at night?
The frequency of sex in one night is even more limited than in sex during the day. Younger people here average 1 to 5 times. Older couples, however, have sex a maximum of 3 times at night, which is rather less.
With each orgasm, the libido, i.e. the desire for sex, decreases further and further. With a one-night stand or in a fresh relationship, the sexual attraction is (still) particularly high, so both sides tend to have more sex.
In addition to hormonal exhaustion, physical fatigue also occurs with each further orgasm. Yes, sex is like a kind of sport, and as you sweat you also burn calories.
Furthermore, the genitals are constantly irritated during sex. After long and frequent sexual intercourse, irritation of the skin occurs. This can go as far as minor injuries. At the latest after a few rounds, it is no longer fun for the participants.
How many times per month is sex normal?
On average, men have sex 5.74 times in a month. The median for women is 5.52 for 4 weeks. So an ordinary value for sex per month is 2 to 10 times.
With increasing age, sexual activity decreases. Approximately 13% of 18 to 25 year old’s have sex over 10 times a week. For those in the age range of 46 to 55 years old, the frequency is only about 6%.
Of course, if you have a lower sex drive, you can always read our article which examines this in more detail, and provides some great tips to get back on track!
Now let’s take a closer look at the data in 3 tables:
Sex per month for couples – Table 1
Research: Sexual Satisfaction and Relationship Happiness – Julia R. Heiman
Sex | Minimum | Maximum | Sex a month |
Male | 0 | 81 | 5,74 |
Female | 0 | 80 | 5,52 |
In this sex study, a total of 1,009 participants participated. The couples were between 40 and 70 years old. The central value is 55 years for men and 52 years for women.
Sex in the last 4 weeks for heterosexual Men – Table 2

Sex in the last 4 weeks for heterosexual Men – Table 3

In the studies shown in Tables 2 & 3 – 4,955 people (2,336 men and 2,619 women) were asked about their sexual experiences.
How much sex per week?
So far, you’ve learned how often sex per month is normal. Of course, it would be very easy to simply divide the results by 4. However, we have more data for you.
Cam4 undertook a survey on sexual preferences some time ago. One question was, “How many times a week do you have sex?”
Here are the results:
How often do you have sex per week? | Frequency |
Less than once | 30,45% |
1 or 2 times | 26,82% |
3 or 4 times | 24,55% |
5 or 6 times | 9,55% |
At least 7 times | 8,64% |
How much sex in old age?
As we have seen in Table 2 and Table 3, sexual activity continues to decrease with advancing age. This is completely normal. From the age of 66, only 50% of men and 27% of women have sex.
By the way, there is no magic age limit when people should stop having sex. Most people stop having sex sometime between the ages of 60 and 70.
If you still feel fit and healthy and your libido is still active, then there is nothing against sex at 70 or even 80 years old.
Conclusion: how often is sex normal or healthy?
As we know, every person is different. Some people have the need for daily sex, while others do without the sexual act. So comparisons with other people don’t really make much sense.
In general, we have less sex than is often suggested in the media and advertising. So just relax and enjoy it when you are having sex.
